Realtime Depositions – Mobile Ready and Easier Than Ever

Image
If you’re accustomed to thinking you need a notebook computer to access your realtime depositions, get ready for the next revolution. Thanks to continued advances in wireless communications and mobile devices, realtime streaming of depositions is now easily viewable on iPads®, iPhones®, minis, Kindle Fires® and just about any other tablet or smart phone.

The word on the street is that a growing number of attorneys are now using tablets as their preferred tool for realtime depositions. Why? Because it’s so easy. To learn more, we consulted realtime court reporting expert Sue Terry, and she had rave reviews for this wireless revolution.

According to Terry, gone are the old days of tinkering with notebook computer settings to set up a realtime feed. The process is so much simpler with today’s tablets that she now keeps a stock of iPads® and iPad® minis available for clients. “Actually, any mobile device will work, regardless if it is Windows™-based, Mac®-based, Android®-based, etc. As long as the device has an Internet browser, we can set up the realtime feed,” Terry said. “All the attorney has to do is go to the designated website, choose the deposition and enter a password, and the realtime text will automatically start streaming to their device. It’s that simple.” The attorney’s staff or other resources can also log in from remote locations in the same manner, making it more convenient to have expert witnesses and others present without incurring the cost and time of travel.

Ease of Use, Ease of Movement

We all know that once you have a touch screen, there is no going back. How many of us have grown accustomed to the ease of touchscreen on our personal iPad®, only to try the same thing on our computer at work? One very nice feature of mobile device ready realtime software is that it has evolved to take advantage of touchscreen technology. “Now you can do things like touch the screen to zoom in and mark testimony or pinch the screen to shrink or enlarge the text,” said Terry, “Many of my clients love these features.”

Terry also likes the freedom of movement her clients gain by using today’s wireless mobile devices. In earlier days, when it was more common to use Bluetooth technology or a direct cable to set up the realtime feed, attorneys were limited to sitting in front of their notebook computer during the deposition. With today’s mobile devices, if counsel needs to confer outside the courtroom, they can take their iPad® or mobile device out of the courtroom and continue to access the live testimony during the discussion.

These may sound like simple features, but they actually deliver powerful benefits in the form of greater mobility, increased productivity and ease of use. Given these benefits, and our rapid adoption of mobile technology, we can expect the legal profession to continue to push mobile devices to do even more in the courtroom.

Where to Find Mobile Realtime Court Reporting Services

Going mobile in realtime is pretty easy. The key is to request a certified realtime court reporter from your court reporting agency. If the court reporter is certified, they’ll have the training to and experience to set up a realtime feed on a wide range of devices.
