From Los Angeles to Hong Kong: Meet Brandy Stull, Newest Member of Merrill’s International Court Reporting Team

BrandyStull-5Merrill Deposition Services Asia continues to add talented international court reporters to our team. Meet Brandy Stull, who heeded the call to join Merrill’s Hong Kong office in February 2014 and hasn’t looked back.

Prior to joining Merrill’s Asia team, Stull was enjoying a thriving court reporting career in the Los Angeles, CA legal market. But she had always wanted to work internationally, and after following Jade King’s blog featuring her adventures as an international court reporter for Merrill, she jumped at the chance to work for Merrill in Asia. She now lives in Wan Chai, Hong Kong, where she’s met a diverse group of ex-pats who have helped her learn the ropes of living in Asia.

But her work takes her far beyond Hong Kong, as Merrill provides court reporting services to clients throughout Asia. “I’ve just returned from a nine-day deposition project in Manila,” she said, “and since February, I’ve been to Osaka, Tokyo, Seoul, Singapore and Taipai.” She loves having the opportunity to visit new, exotic places and keeps a photo diary of her travels.

More Diverse Court Reporting Work

In addition to expanding her travel horizons, Stull is also delighted to find that her international job is expanding her court reporting experience. Prior to joining the Hong Kong team, Stull’s work was largely focused on taking depositions in the Los Angeles area. After becoming extremely proficient in this aspect of court reporting, she was ready to take on new challenges.

Now, as part of the Hong Kong team, her work takes her well beyond depositions. “In Los Angeles, my work included a very small amount of court work. Now, I spend a large portion of my time reporting in trials and arbitrations,” she said. There was a bit of a learning curve to taking on these new assignments, but she loves the diversity of the work. “I look forward to going to court every day,” she said

Stull wanted to give herself room to determine if she’d really like living and working abroad, so she signed a one-year contract to “test the waters.” But she has no regrets. “I have the best job in the world,” she said, “and I’m making the best money I’ve ever made in my career.”
Merrill’s Long-Term Commitment to Providing International Court Reporting in Asia

Since 1994, Merrill Asia’s reporting team has grown from a local team of two reporters to an Asia-wide network of over 30 professionals who live in Asia and understand local dialects, cultures and legal proceedings.

The demand for court reporting and other legal support services has escalated, particularly as technology companies must deal with intellectual property issues focused in Southeast Asia. Also, arbitration activity in Singapore, Hong Kong and Seoul continues to increase as their reputations gain worldwide attention.

In order to continue to meet the ever-increasing demand for its services, Merrill Asia has made a long-term investment in expanding its network of professional resources. “Demand is at an all-time high for court reporting services and we believe it will only continue to grow. This offers reporters an ideal opportunity to live in a fascinating environment, while working on U.S. depositions and internationally significant matters,” said Katy Forse, International Deposition Coordinator for Merrill’s Asia office.
